Solution

Team Coaching

Team Coaching is used when the development challenge exists in how a team functions collectively, and cannot be addressed effectively through individual coaching alone. The team is the client, and the work happens with the team as a whole.

When it applies

When Team Coaching adds value

Team Coaching is appropriate when the challenge cannot be solved effectively by working only with individuals. The diagnostic lens is the team's collective effectiveness.

The challenge is collective

The difficulty shows up in how the team works together, so coaching individuals separately would not reach it.

The lens is team effectiveness

The diagnostic question is how well the team delivers on its shared purpose, not how capable each member is on their own.

The team owns the work

The team is the client. Members look at their own patterns together and decide what to change.

Framework

The Five Disciplines

The work is guided by Peter Hawkins' Five Disciplines, which cover both what happens inside the team and how the team connects with the wider organisation.

01

Commissioning

Clarify the mandate. What the organisation asks of this team, and what success looks like for the stakeholders who depend on it.

02

Clarifying

Agree purpose, objectives, roles and ways of working, so the team is aligned on what it is there to do.

03

Cooperating

Look at how members work together day to day, including communication, decision-making and accountability.

04

Connecting

Examine the relationships with stakeholders outside the team and how the team engages with them.

05

Core Learning

Build the team's own capacity to reflect, adapt and keep improving after the engagement ends.

Delivery

How an engagement typically runs

This is a typical approach. The sequence is adapted to the team, its size and the challenge involved.

01

Pre-interviews

Individual conversations with all team members to understand the situation from each perspective.

02

Priority session

One Team Coaching session to identify the priority improvement topic together.

03

Live sessions

One to three live Team Coaching sessions working on that topic.

04

Final report

An anonymised report with observations and recommendations.

05

Six-month check-in

A sponsor check-in to see whether resulting change has been sustainable.

+

Alongside individual coaching

Team Coaching can run alongside individual coaching, or follow it when shared insights indicate that a collective intervention is the right next step.

Expected Outcomes

The changes we support your team with

These are intended outcomes rather than guaranteed results. What a team achieves depends on the situation and the commitment of its members.

Greater alignment and shared ownership

Create clarity around purpose, priorities and responsibilities, so the team knows what it needs to achieve together.

More open and constructive conversations

Address tensions, challenge assumptions and have the conversations needed to move the team forward.

Stronger collaboration and accountability

Work more effectively across differences, dependencies and commitments, with greater ownership for collective outcomes.

Better decisions and team effectiveness

Build stronger ways of working that support clearer decisions, effective execution and the team's ability to adapt.

Investment

Team Coaching is scoped per team and quoted after Discovery

The scope depends on team size, the team challenge, what the diagnostic work surfaces and the delivery approach that fits.

FAQ

Questions sponsors ask

When is Team Coaching appropriate?

When the challenge sits in the team's collective effectiveness and cannot be resolved by working with individuals alone.

How is Team Coaching different from individual coaching?

The team is the client. The work looks at shared purpose, collaboration, decision-making and accountability rather than one person's development.

What are the Five Disciplines?

Peter Hawkins' framework of Commissioning, Clarifying, Cooperating, Connecting and Core Learning. It is the reference framework for the work.

Who participates?

The whole team, including the team lead. Delivery and leadership teams are the most common.

How does the engagement typically work?

Pre-interviews with all members, a session to agree the priority topic, one to three live sessions, an anonymised final report and a six-month sponsor check-in. The sequence is adapted to the team.

Can Team Coaching be combined with individual coaching?

Yes. It can run alongside individual coaching, or follow it when shared insights show that a collective intervention is the right next step.

How is confidentiality handled?

What individuals share in pre-interviews is not attributed to them. Reporting to the sponsor is anonymised and stays at team level.

How is the investment determined?

Team Coaching is scoped per team and quoted after the Discovery Call, based on team size, the challenge and the delivery approach agreed. Prices exclude VAT.

What happens during the Discovery Call?

We look at the team challenge, whether Team Coaching fits, which approach may work and what the appropriate next step is.

Your needs → Our suggestion → Next steps

Let's look at your leadership challenge.

The Discovery Call is a working conversation. We use it to understand what you are dealing with and to suggest a sensible next step, whether or not that step involves us.
